Obituary: Regina Shavers

It is with great sadness that we share with you the news that Regina Shavers,
founding Executive Director of GRIOT Circle, passed away yesterday.

Regina was not only a fierce advocate for our communities, but she was a life
force and a shining light for many younger activists. Many of us at QEJ were
blessed to have friendships with her over the years, and will miss that
friendship. In addition, she was an ally to QEJ's work on many occasions, and
she helped QEJ obtain some of our very first funding, by nominating us for the
Union Square Award that we received in 2004.

Below is a brief biography of her, highlighting some of her work.

Our condolences go out to her partner, family and friends.
Regina will be missed by many people.

- the staff of Queers for Economic Justice

REGINA SHAVERS

Regina Shavers founded the GRIOT Circle, "an intergenerational and culturally
diverse community-based social service organization responsive to the realities
of older lesbians, gay men, bisexuals, two-spirit and transgender people
(LGBTST) of all colors."

Regina Shavers had a long history of community involvement and activism.

As co-chair of District Council 37 she advocates for workers’ rights, and
serves on the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees
(AFSCME) Lesbian and Gay Rights Advisory Board. She played an active role in
the Campaign for and Inclusive Family Policy, the citywide coalition that
negotiated with Mayor David N. Dinkins to obtain Domestic Partner benefits for
New York City employees.

She also helped to found Pride At Work, a constituency group of the AFL-CIO
that focuses on the rights and unionization of LGBT workers.

Regina was also the former Assistant Director of the NYC Department of
Health’s HIV Training Institute. Here, she created and implemented curricula
for HIV prevention and treatment, including curricula specifically tailored
towards older populations. Regina continued with her HIV/AIDS facilitation as
a member of the New York Association on HIV Over Fifty (NYAHOF).

In 1995, Regina co-founded GRIOT Circle to combat the lack of community that
she had observed amongst LGBT Elders, particularly those of color. She assumed
the role of Executive Director of GRIOT in 2000.

Regina Shavers founded the GRIOT Circle as "an intergenerational and culturally
diverse community-based social service organization responsive to the realities
of older lesbians, gay men, bisexuals, two-spirit and transgender people
(LGBTST) of all colors." The goal of GRIOT Circle is to maintain a safe space
for elders, provide emotional support and quality programming which affirms
age, gender, racial, spiritual and ethnic origins for the over 50 LGBTST
community in Brooklyn. GRIOT Circle provides educational and informational
forums, referrals to social service providers, health and fitness programs,
spiritual wellness, computer training, a friendly visitors program and social
outreach. Volunteer members make reassurance telephone calls and visits to
homebound, sick or hospitalized persons.

Have you heard of SoJust? Socializing for Justice?

Socializing for Justice is a network for like-minded people engaged in social justice issues - focused on building a progressive cross-issue community.

We're doing it by putting the SOCIAL back in SOCIAL JUSTICE. Twice a month we organize socials that are focused on giving attendees a chance to meet each other and make connections. Events attract newcomers to the city to seasoned organizers and everyone in between.
I invite you and your colleagues to attend our next event on Wednesday, January 30th - Putting the Social Back in Social Justice IV at the Foggy Goggle on Boylston - bring flyers about your organization for the free literature table! It's a great space meet volunteers. Event details are posted below.

Check out our press release to learn about the group's origins and philosophy. Any chance there's somewhere you can hang a flyer? Here's the PDF .

Let me know if you have any questions - info@socializingforjustice.org.

Thanks, I hope to see you on the 30th!
Robbie

Putting the Social Back in Social Justice IV
Are you looking for like-minded progressives to hang out with in Boston? Want to cross-promote your events and campaigns? Are you new to the area and looking for groups to get involved in? Are you psyched about building strong cross-issue coalitions?

Join Socializing for Justice at the Foggy Goggle* for Putting the SOCIAL Back in Social Justice IV
Wednesday, January 30th at 7PM
No program. No speaker. Just arrive and enjoy yourself.

RSVP (greatly appreciated!) at www.sojust.org - newcomers always welcome!

There will be drink and appetizer specials - 1/2 price appetizers, $7 pitchers of beer, and $12 fishbowls.

At Socializing for Justice (SoJust) events you can hang out with friends, make new ones, find a date, get the scoop on a job, and find out what's going on this weekend - political or social. And the best part is that SoJust members share your vision of building a more just world.

If you're involved with a group or project and want to spread the word bring flyers for the free lit table - and there'll be lots of opportunity to schmooze and network while sharing cheap pitchers of beer

*Sorry, this event is 21+ and the bathroom is located downstairs (no elevator).

The Foggy Goggle is across from the Hynes Convention Center at 911 Boylston Street.

$2 fee per person to cover group expenses.

From our FAQs:
"It's not very easy for me to meet new people and I'm not really one for small talk at bars."
We hear you. That's why at SoJust events, in addition to traditional name tags, we have "Ask Me About" and "Looking For" tags. That way you can slap whatever you're into lately up on your shirt and wait for fellow SoJusters to approach you. These seem to do the trick of moving past the basic "where do you live? what do you do for work?" questions to conversations that lead to more substantial connections.

"What actually happens at events?"
You'll always be greeted by friendly folks who can help get you socializing, introduce you to people, and chat with you about questions or wishes. It's likely a few people will be there promoting their campaigns and issues (yes, SoJust welcomes that sort of behavior). At our bigger events, there's always a literature table to toss down flyers, postcards, and other paraphenalia about events around town. Most importantly, we can pretty much guarantee there will be someone there you've never met before. As one of our members said, "You are bringing together people who might never get together otherwise - if that ain't a step towards justice I don't know what is."

Noisemaker Purim Party

!!CALL TO ARTISTS!! !!SAVE THE DATE!!

GRAGGER/NOISEMAKER
The Workmen's Circle First Annual Radical Purim Party

The Workmen's Circle (a secular, progressive Jewish community) is planning GRAGGER/NOISEMAKER, a Purim Party on Saturday, March 22, 2008. Purim is a Jewish holiday that celebrates liberation and invites us to dress up, come out, and spin the world on its head.

Taking the theme of Gender Justice, this event will be a celebration of radical community and culture, centered on a Jewish holiday and open to folks of all backgrounds. We'll be celebrating the work of Keshet and Massachusetts Transgender Political Coalition. The gragger, the Jewish noisemaker, is traditionally used to drown out the name of our foes - on March 22, we'll make some serious noise in a rowdy call for justice and joy.

We want this night to be fun, liberatory, subversive, joyous, and raucous as all heck - and we need your help! We're looking for artists of all genres, backgrounds, and expressions who want to contribute their vision to this event. We are seeking visual and interactive art around the themes of Gender Justice and/or Purim. For more information, contact Marjorie at marjorie@workmenscircleboston.org.

Skinny Vegan Womyn in the Kitch

A recent article in the New York Times features a new book about womyn's empowerment, veganism, and healthy doses of "fun." Titled "Skinny Bitch in the Kitch" it is marketed as a cookbook for vegan womyn who are still "normal." The author puts it thusly,
We are normal girls. We like reality TV and purses, all the fun stuff. But we just happen to know that most of what normal girls put in their bodies on a daily basis is barely even food.
It is a strange combination which takes veganism out of its traditional political context, isolates the health and animal rights aspects, and inserts it into the "normal" American womyn's life. Here is another choice quote to illustrate further,
You know how you feel when a tall, thin, pretty woman walks by and something inside you wants to say, ‘That skinny bitch!’ The book takes that envy and anger and gives you a new place to put it.
In other places the author repudiates the association of thinness with health, but it is not apparent from the title and most of the statements describing the cookbook. I would like to see these kinds of issues discussed further, which I have not seen even on the blogs. For instance, I've not seen a mention of this on Feministing or anywhere else (let me know if I am wrong).

For those looking for great vegan cookbooks, Vegan Vittles is still my favorite, but I just got the new Veganomnicon and it packs a wallop! I am looking forward to trying out this treasure trove of recipes and perhaps reporting back on them. If you have other suggestions or opinions about the Skinny Bitch phenomenon, leave them in the comments.
