The Vera Institute of Justice, a private nonprofit organization, works closely with leaders in government and civil society to improve the services people rely on for safety and justice. Researchers in the Center collect and analyze data to diagnose problems and inequities in juvenile justice system delivery and to evaluate reforms to solve such problems. In addition, researchers evaluate Vera’s demonstration projects which test innovative approaches to addressing specific gaps in the juvenile justice system. By providing an integrated mix of technical assistance, research, and planning services, the Center on Youth Justice is uniquely positioned to enhance rational decision making in juvenile justice processes, and to support innovative system change for court involved youth.

The Center on Youth Justice seeks a research associate to work with an interdisciplinary team conducting research and providing technical assistance locally and nationally on a set of projects involving juvenile justice. The research associate will participate in multiple stages of research design, implementation, and analysis. Responsibilities may also include talking and meeting with government agencies to diagnose data capacity.

Responsibilities: The main responsibilities of the Research Associate will include working on all research planning and implementation; managing and analyzing computerized databases; constructing and preparing data collection instruments, recruiting and interviewing study subjects, conducting statistical analysis, and writing reports. Occasional travel outside of New York City is required.

Qualifications: Applicants must possess a Master’s degree in sociology, psychology, public policy, mental health or closely related discipline and some knowledge of, and experience in, social science research, particularly in the areas of corrections, criminal justice, and public policy. Position requirements include:

* Three to five years research experience
* Experience in developing and managing databases
* Experience conducting data analysis using SPSS
* Experience in designing and conducting statistical analysis
* Experience in working in applied research settings, particularly in criminal justice
* Interest and experience in designing, conducting and analyzing focus groups, interviews and surveys
* Familiarity with or interest in performance measurement and public policy analysis
* Experience working with government partners
* Excellent presentation and writing skills
